Year One - Jesse Owens

Jesse Owens at the Berlin Olympics in 1936 -

Welcome to Y1!

Your Year 1 teachers are Ms Evans and Mrs Darbyshire with our class teaching assistants Mrs Nelson and Mrs Saar.

This year we are named after the inspirational athlete Jesse Owens.  He was the youngest of ten children, Jesse grew up working in the cotton fields of Alabama. Discovered by his high school track and field coach, Jesse quickly rose to fame as an athlete.  He went on the challenge racism on the world stage at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and made new world records.  We will be learning and discovering inspiring facts about Jesse Owens throughout the year.

In Year 1, our aim is to ensure that your child experiences a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One and that the Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that your child has had in Reception. Learning through play both indoors and outdoors will continue to be an important part of the school day, and your child will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused, eager and independent learners

Pupils will start each day with Phonics then moving onto Active Reading. English and Maths lessons will follow each morning. Science, History, Geography, P.E, DT and other foundation subjects will be taught in the afternoons.  For more subject-specific information please see our Curriculum Page.

PE: Each Wednesday (with Beth Tweddle Gymnastics) and Thursday (with one of our sports coaches from EITC -Everton in the Community.

P.E Kits will need to be in school from Monday to Friday and will be sent home every Friday.  Please ensure your child's P.E kit is clearly labelled with their name.

Spellings: Every Monday a list of phonic sounds or spellings will be sent home for your child to learn through the week ready for phonics activities during the week. We will also be looking for the words within your child’s everyday writing. These are for you to keep and not to be returned to school.

Reading books: This year in Y1 due to COVID19 restrictions we are asking pupils to bring back their reading book bags every Tuesday. Books will then be quarantined for 48hrs and cleaned before they are changed and e sent home with pupils every Friday.
